Classic British recipes have been having a moment, and we're here for it. Whether it's a roast dinner or this rich banoffee pie, there's no better time to make these recipes at home. Here, we'll walk you through how to make banoffee pie. You'll fall in love with the dreamy layers of rich caramel, sliced bananas, and whipped cream. Don't forget the chocolate on top!

What Is Banoffee Pie?

Banoffee pie is a classic British dessert that's made with layers of banana slices, caramel, and whipped cream. The crust of the tart can be made several ways, often with crushed biscuits or a biscuit-like dough. Some variations of the banana dessert recipe call for chocolate in the filling or shaved on top. The original banoffee pie recipe was created in 1971 at the Hungry Monk Restaurant in Sussex.

Why Is It Called Banoffee Pie?

The dessert's name is a combination of "banana" and "toffee," which are the pie's primary ingredients.

Banoffee Pie Ingredients

Grab these ingredients to make our British banoffee pie recipe.

  • Crust: Rather than a biscuit crust, we're making a homemade graham cracker crust. You'll need graham cracker crumbs, sugar, a pinch of ground ginger, and butter to make it.
  • Bananas: To prep the bananas for the pie, slice them and toss them with lemon juice to help prevent browning.
  • Caramel: A can of dulce de leche is our Test Kitchen's delicious shortcut for the caramel layer.
  • Whipped Cream: This is a good time to use homemade whipped cream—purchased options don't compare! Simply whip up heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla to make it.
  • Shaved Chocolate: Our recipe testers preferred the flavor of semisweet chocolate shavings on top.

How to Make Banoffee Pie

Here's a quick look at how to make homemade Banoffee pie.

  1. Make the Crust: Make the graham cracker crust and press it into a tart pan. Bake until golden and cool completely before filling.
  2. Prep the Filling: Slice the bananas and toss them with lemon juice.
  3. Layer in the Filling: Spread dulce de leche in the cooled crust and top with banana slices.
  4. Make the Whipped Cream: Make the homemade whipped cream and spread it over the banana slices. Place in the fridge to chill.
  5. Add Chocolate Shavings: Just before serving, top the banoffee pie with chocolate shavings.

How to Store Banoffee Pie

Store banoffee pie in the fridge for 3-4 days for the best flavor.

Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 1/4 cups finely crushed graham crackers (about 10 full cracker sheets)

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

  • 3 medium bananas, sliced (about 1/3-inch thick)

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • 1 (13.4) ounce can dulce de leche

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract

  • Semisweet chocolate shavings

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Lightly coat a 10-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom with nonstick spray. In a medium bowl, combine melted butter and granulated sugar. Add crushed graham crackers and ground ginger; toss to mix well. Spread in the prepared tart pan. Press into bottom and sides, forming a firm, smooth layer. Bake 5 minutes or until edges are light brown. Cool in tart pan completely on a wire rack.

  2. In a medium bowl, gently toss together banana slices and lemon juice to coat.

  3. Spread dulce de leche evenly on the bottom of the baked crust. Top with banana slices.

  4. In a medium bowl, beat cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla bean paste until soft peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes. Dollop cream over bananas, spread evenly. Chill 1 to 2 hours before serving or up to 24 hours. Garnish with chocolate shavings before serving.
